School Time!!!
There is plenty of excitement in the air as we gear back up for another year at Mighty Oak. Final enrollment assessments are finished and teacher training is under way, we are excited to be bringing back all of our returning teachers. Seeing so many familiar faces is an important step in creating a good atmosphere as our students return to school next week. We are also excited to see the school as all the processes and lessons we have learned over our first few years begin to come together into something beautiful.
With the demographics of our neighborhood, we have a student body that has lots of trauma, not always a ton of familial support, and some missing social skills. That combination has led to a big focus on social-emotional learning in our first few years. Dedicating time to teaching students skills to help regulate themselves and not act out of emotions or retaliation. Our student support specialist, Beth, has been able to put together a system that works for our students over the past 3 years. In this time we also learned about what pedagogical approaches did and did not complement that system and best serve our students.
Now is the year where we get to begin to see things really come together, the social-emotional system and our academics system. We have pulled elements from many pedagogical methods to help our students. Some of the highlights are teaching cursive and a hands-on Montessori based approach to math. We are focusing on pen and paper teaching and reducing use of tech in the classrooms.
The teaching staff visited the greenhouse to talk about how they could incorporate it into their teaching
After seeing the success of this combination of techniques in a couple of our classes last year, we are excited to be able to provide all our teachers with the needed training and guidance in implementing this school wide. If you are interested in supporting Mighty Oak in some way at the beginning of this year, then take a look at our amazon wishlists below. There you will find not only basic supplies, but also key Montessori and Social-emotional tools that will support us this year. Most of all, please join us in blanketing our students and their families in prayer in these next couple of weeks as they re-enter into a school routine, some of the young ones for the first time.
