First Week!!!
The smell of warm cinnamon rolls, the sound of excited giggles, and the view of toothless smiles filled the halls of Mighty Oak once again every morning this week as school resumed on Wednesday. We welcomed a lot of little ones with our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes packed full of excitement and some nervousness as many of them stepped into their first ever day of school. This excitement was enhanced with the annual big welcome of Mighty Oak where the red carpet was rolled out and pictures of our students and their family were taken. It is so exciting seeing these first timers come to school, but it is also super encouraging seeing the returning ones step right back into the MOA way.
Rolling out the Red Carpet
It was beautiful to see our returning students step in to lead the newer students into the way things worked. Introducing themselves to their new classmates, helping open each other's milk, and informing them of the way things work. They immediately made new best friends and acted as if they’d known each other for their whole lives. There are still quite a few young ones who are nervous, to be expected of these CoVid babies, but our older students did a phenomenal job of creating a fun, welcoming environment. This environment is being enhanced today with a small ‘carnival’ that the school is having to help the students and teachers continue to build relationships in a fun environment.
A Couple of young students practice their building skills
One of the most encouraging things I saw this week was from a returning student during dismissal. Dasanii is a returning student, and when he was leaving one day he dropped his water bottle and made a big spill in the gym. He immediately started walking towards the cafe, the opposite direction of the front door. I followed him out and asked him what was going on.
“I made a mess, I need to help clean it up”, he responded.
I was so proud of that mindset that he had. A testament to the ideas of responsibility and action that we try to cultivate in our students. Encouragement that it has a lasting effect that was not undone by summer, but was able to be brought out in our students. These were just some of the great things we got to see this week, and we are excited to share more of the incredible stories that are sure to come this year.
