La Cucaracha...

La Cucaracha…

If you have been to Love City before you may have seen an old bus, painted blue with graffiti all over it saying Love City. We referred to this as the Love bus and have had it since the early days of Love City. It had 5 rows of seats and when in use would be packed to the brim with team members and all types of equipment. It would be used to go give out food, provide our neighbors rides, and shuttle team members and supplies to and from Westonia for events and camps. It was the perfect size for us to slide the eight burner grill in between the rows that we would use to grill out at the park.

It is one of those vehicles that naturally associated itself with memories. Memories of summer, sunny weather, cookouts, and parties in the park. Memories laughing, running around trying to load things back up as rain poured from the skies. It was a magnet for kids, always curious, wanting to get on and check it out, go for a ride, open and close the doors, honk the horn which would play La Cucaracha tune. The Love bus was always a good time.

Over the years as Love City developed and Mighty Oak grew the bus became used less and less. Being old, without seatbelts, and not able to go over 50 mph, it was impossible to get insured to be able to transport students. As an alternative we have been blessed with a couple of really nice passenger vans over the years that allow us to transport students in inclement weather and provide transportation to field trips without having to rent expensive buses. The Love bus eventually became used less and less as mechanical issues arose and its practicality for our current operations shifted.

Today I watched as the Love bus pulled out of our driveway for the last time. Purchased by one of our mechanic friends from the neighborhood, the bus drove to its new home. The Love bus served its purpose well, helping to transport people and equipment to and from events that showed them how much them, their families, and their community was Loved. It brought smiles to the faces of its neighbors and giggles to all who heard the horn. But it was time to free up the space in the parking lot of our expanding school and bring smiles with a new driver behind the wheel. It will always be fondly remembered by those who got to ride on it and utilize it for their community. And it’s La Cucaracha horn could still be heard being pressed all the way down the street.
