Creating a Culture...
Last week, our 1st-3rd graders joined us over at the greenhouse. They took a tour of the plants and critters that call it home. They learned about the different stages that different plants were in and the conditions those plants like to survive. And they had an absolute blast getting their hands dirty and planting some garlic. They got to see a vibrant garden with greenery and vegetables everywhere, brilliant flowers and pollinators galore, but the garden did not always look that way.
The greenhouse had worn to the elements over the years and been lost to the weeds for a growing season. But with a new covering put on, and a lot of farmer Michelle’s blood, sweat, and tears the land was recultivated to be able to grow once again. There was weeding, tilling, mulching, new dirt, and tons of other work that was done to get the land to a point to host the vibrant ecosystem it now does. Michelle cultured the land, she created a culture that would allow the plants to thrive. This is a microcosm of Love City’s mission.
Love City’s mission is to simply love our neighbors and community, creating a culture that empowers a movement of loving people as they are. In the past 10 years, a lot has been done at Love City to create that culture. One of the big cultural shifts that I feel has been worked towards is a culture of deserving better. Our neighbors deserving better and believing that they deserve better. Where we know we deserve to be able to look across the street and see a beautiful garden with beautiful flowerbeds. A culture where we know we deserve to have a local, affordable place that uses fresh food instead of having to drive across town for an expensive farm to fork meal. A culture where we believe the children of our neighborhood deserve quality education that meets them where they are and elevates them. A culture where we believe we should have accessible jobs that don’t require long bus rides or expensive uber's to get across town to work. A culture where we believe we deserve a healthy neighborhood, and where we believe that we have the power to help transform it into that.
There have been hundreds of team members and thousands of volunteers that have given their blood sweat and tears to help us cultivate this land and create that culture over the past 10 years, and I am sure if you are reading this you are most likely one of them. So thank you. I hope that these newsletters allow you to see some of the fruit that has grown from your help cultivating this land. I hope that the wonder and amazement our students see looking into a vibrant greenhouse that they have helped with is the same wonder and amazement you see when looking at a school full of children being educated in a way that works for them. A way that shows them Love. A way that makes them realize what they deserve in their neighborhood, and that shows them it is possible.
