Fruit of the Spirit: Goodness...

Fruit of the Spirit: Goodness...

Good is an impossible concept to outline because it is conditional. The very nature of the concept of goodness is not contained in a guidebook. We understand what it means to be patient and kind, we have solid ideas of what joy and Love look like, but goodness can be elusive. One person’s good may be another’s bad, one person’s right, another's wrong. It is good to drink water if you are dehydrating, but not if you’re drowning. So what does it mean to have Goodness, to practice goodness?

In the beginning, God creates different parts of the world day by day, reflecting after many of these days and classifying what was created as good. After the sixth day when God had finished creating he reflected upon everything and classified it as very good. In the same way when God creates all of us in our mothers’ womb, he calls us good, and this goodness is the state we are born into. A tree is good for being and acting like a tree, a fish is good for being and acting like a fish, we are good for being and acting like us, from the moment we are born. But the darkness starts to try and creep in from the moment we are born. For some it is immediately the environment they are born into, for others it takes time for the darkness to slowly creep in over the years.

Since goodness is best summed up as being who God created us to be, the best way to think of practicing goodness is to protect our inherent goodness, the identity that God formed in us since before we were born. To practice goodness is to reflect on anything that may have caused us to veer from that intended identity. To practice goodness is to help protect the goodness of the little ones around us, who have had less time for the darkness to creep in.

It is a practice that our educators participate in everyday. Helping our young students to learn their identity in the Kingdom of Heaven. A practice that is naturally instilled in our students as they are embarking on their educational journey. A practice that we hope we ingrain as habitual in them as lifelong learners, where they will continuously reflect on their inherent goodness as they go through life. Even when others tell them they are not good, that their neighborhood is not good, that their families are not good; that we have instilled in them that the way their God sees them, in their true identity in His Kingdom, that they Good.
