Fruit of the Spirit: Faithfulness...
Life is full of distractions. Colors, sounds, touches, emotions, constant stimulus that our brains are constantly processing and interpreting. All of these external stimuli are what goes into building the reality around us. All the tangible inputs that create the world around us. But there is also an unseen world. One that everybody has experienced at some point or another, whether through a moment where everything just seems more clear, more vibrant, where everything is just right. Others see angels or things outside of the natural realm. Others are able to interpret the things going on around them in unique ways. Everyone is equipped to see the world in some unique way.
Hebrews tells us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. I used to think faith was a trust in God’s existence, but I think just as important of a component of Faith is a trust in ourselves. A trust in who God created us to be. A confidence in the things that we see, even though they may not be of the natural world or tangible to everyone, that those things we see are still real.
A few years ago I wrote about an interaction I had with one of our younger students who was telling me that they aren’t fast. I was shocked. A kindergartener who had already had so many people tell him that he was slow that he just accepted it as the truth. It was a lapse in faith. Where all of a sudden this student no longer had confidence in who they were created to be, but were going based off of what everyone else was telling them was true. There was no confidence that they could learn to run quicker, or do exercises to increase leg strength, or anything like that. It was just already over, they were already told who they were by the rest of the world, in Kindergarten! At Mighty Oak we try not only to instill a trust in God to the students, but also a trust in themselves. A trust that they can dream and grow into who God has created them to be. For themselves, this community, and the Kingdom of God.
