Future Entrepreneurs...
Entrepreneurship has always been something that we have tried to ingrain into MOA students over the years in various ways. This semester has brought some exciting opportunities for students to learn from the businesses that Love City already operates. From our youngest students to our oldest, planned events and spontaneous moments, they got a first hand look at business and how it helps support their school.
Last Friday our Pre-K/K class got to take a min field trip to Porkland. With this youngest group, the connection between the various parts of Love City and MOA have not always sunk in yet. They were shocked to see Sierra, Shawn, and myself over at Porkland. They are used to seeing us in the halls of the school and in the cafe helping with breakfast and lunch, so many of them were shocked to see us appear elsewhere. They got to come have their lunch at Porkland and see us on our busiest Friday of the year yet. They got to see the kitchen and meet the people who work inside it and see what the different types of equipment do. This was in preparation for their own entrepreneurial endeavor.
This young class is hosting a “Willow Market”, where parents are allowed to come in and purchase various snacks, drinks, and crafts for between $1-7. They helped in curating what to sell, pricing, and making the items. They are excited to share their hard work with their families and to help support their school.
Another entrepreneurial opportunity arose this week thanks to the 24 hour stomach bug that has been sneaking its way around our students and staff. One day this week moved us deep into our roster of substitute teachers with Shawn stepping back into his former class for a day to fill in. We are currently looking into introducing ice cream into our menu at Porkland and are meeting with different vendors. Shawn already had a meeting set with a vendor and instead of scratching it, turned into an opportunity for the 4th/5th graders to learn about business. They showed up to the meeting excited and full of questions for the sales rep, and they did not take it easy. They are the students who have been with us the longest and understand the DNA of Love City, and their questions proved this. Fourth grader Sonny Ray laid it out for them letting them know that “we are the Church, the people, not in some building”. Shawn briefed the students on the difference between vendors, who are just looking for another customer, and partners, who want to come alongside and support our mission with us. So when it came time for questions, fifth grader Kohen came out and asked them “so how would you improve our community”. I wish I could tell you what the answer was but I think I blacked out being blown away with our fifth grader’s ability to formulate such an amazing question. That is what fifth graders should be asking though, especially when they will be the ones making these relationships and decisions in fifteen years. It is beautiful and encouraging to get to see a glimpse of that now.
