Family...

Family…

The word “family” means so many different things to so many different people. It can be overall positive, overall negative, it can be an up and down relationship, it can be easy, it can be hard, it can be comforting, or cold, friendly or scary. It can mean 2 people or 50 people, and can remind you of good things or obligations. It encompasses rebellious children and controlling parents. And the vastness of what this concept of family means to people did not just develop in the modern time. Family has been complex since the beginning of time, in just the first 4 chapters of the Bible we have a guy murder his own brother. Yet with all tied up with this concept of family it is one of, if not, the most used metaphors in the Bible. God is called Father, we are called sons and daughters, the other believers of this world are called brothers and sisters. Why would God pick something so complex as His base metaphor?

At Love City we have always tried to create a family atmosphere. A place where we take care of one another, outside of the walls of where we work and outside hours we plan to be there. We try to take time for one another, because it shows Love. The environment in this neighborhood can be a taxing one, and it can wear people down quickly, so when we take even more time to help one another, it means a lot. When we go above and beyond for each other, it means a lot. And like family we can get upset and pouty and wound up at times, we can make mistakes, but at the end of the day, we’re still doing it.

One of our team members rides a bike to work everyday. Love City has given him a few different bikes over the years that he has ridden until they could not ride anymore. After his last bike broke, he decided instead of buying a new one he would save up for a moped. So when we weren’t able to help him out with a ride he would make the 45 min walk to work as he saved up. When one of our other team members saw this, they decided that they would much rather give them their own bike that they didn’t ever ride. For the first time it was a gift that was coming directly from a team member from the community; it was not from Love City or myself or Shawn and Inga. There was no asking around to see if anybody had a one. It was someone seeing a need, and filling it. It was a snapshot of family at its best; a snapshot of God’s people operating in His Kingdom.
