Field Day...

Field Day…

There is one week of school left for Mighty Oak. The end of the year brings a lot of fun projects and events to help celebrate the accomplishments of our students throughout the course of the year. These end of year festivities include field day. With fun games and activities, snacks, and more time outside, it was a day filled with fun, the way field days and education should be.

Field days are a tradition as old as American schools themselves. They hold a special place in many peoples hearts providing some nostalgia. Memories of warm weather, the sign that summer was near, and a space to be active. It is also a place for some healthy competition.

While classrooms provide a great place for students to work on cooperation, it can be tricky to cultivate a healthy atmosphere of competition; it is so easy for students to begin to constantly compare their work to their peers or associate their worth with a letter grade. Instead it is better to help students see the value in the progress they make. Instead of tying their identity to a letter grade we can help instill a sense of pride in the process of learning, helping to achieve Mighty Oaks mission of creating lifelong learners. But competitiveness still has a place in our lives, helping to motivate us and push ourselves beyond what we thought was possible. Events like field day are a great environment to help foster that healthy competitiveness.

This year we partnered with Louisville Sports Commission, and they put on the field day for the students with activities to get them moving and challenging themselves. As well as bringing plenty of adults along to help coach, motivate, and show Love to our students. They had all types of events to interest the kids and the students had a great time getting to show off their skills. With the year coming to a close, it was a great way for everyone to burn off some of that excess end of year energy and have some fun as a school family. Summer is a time of year that many of our students don’t necessarily look forward to. Leaving the structure and peace of Mighty Oak for the chaos and uncertainty that awaits many of them at home. Field day helped provide some fun and distraction from that thought that has started to creep into many of our students' heads. As we enter into our summer break next week we hope you will join us in prayer over our students as they head into a break from their Mighty Oak family.
