The Covenants…
Growing up in church I was always taught that a covenant was like a contract. But that isn’t true, a contract is a conditional agreement made within a timeframe. If one party breaks their agreed terms then the contract can be voided and the other party released of their duties. A covenant on the other hand is unconditional, eternal. That is why there is so much wisdom to be gained from the covenants of the old testament. While Jesus brought a new covenant, it did not replace the old covenants, but built upon them. There are five major covenants that the Old Testament takes its shape around.
While there are many great lessons that can be learned from all the covenants made throughout the old testament, one of the most beautiful ones for me is the idea of the blessing. In Gen 12, Abram is called from his home by God and is promised a land, a name that's made great, a nation, and a blessing. We see the nation completed in the nation of Israel at Mt. Sinai, the land fulfilled as they enter the land God sent them to, Abraham’s name is remembered thousands of years later. The blessing is a more continuous completion. There are two aspects to it, receiving the blessing and being the blessing. The people of the covenant are not only to be blessed by God, but they are meant to bless all who come into contact with them, all peoples from all nations. A blessing that God’s people are still meant to be to the world around them.
The Davidic and New covenants shift the home of the Lord from being tied to a geographic location and peoples, to being tied to a position of the heart. His laws will be written on His peoples’ hearts and minds. His home will be dwelling with them. The priesthood will be through the Melchizedek priesthood that is eternal. It will be marked by the Love in peoples’ hearts and their obedience in Him.
Loving is something that can be taught, can be ingrained into children from a young age. Surrounded in Love and safety children can learn to have this Love written on their hearts, to take it back with them into their homes, whatever chaos and confusion that may bring with it. This Love is what we teach at Mighty Oak, through atmosphere, actions, and lessons. This Love is what makes God’s people a blessing to the world, makes MOA students a blessing to their families. Making a chaotic, corrupt, dark world into a more peaceful, just, and light place. And this is done through an eternal covenant. An eternal covenant that breaks generational curses and brings life. And that is what we seek to do one child at a time.
